Germany's friendly new foreign minister!

In the past we had a foreign minister who didn´t speak any english.

That pome journalist was trying to get to him, cos westerwelle had embarrassed himself on a different occasion with another English speaking journalist before. And I reckon Westerwelle sort of realized it, but got still caught off guard and hence his weird answer and reaction.

And I mean, he s got a point. "Das ist Deuschtland hier"
When you go to a press conference held in Germany, for a German Politician, the audience being German.. And does anybody really think the BBC sends a journalist there that doesn't speak and/or understand German?

Der deutsche Aussenminister hat auf einer deutschen Pressekonferenz auf eiine englische Frage auf deutsch geantwortet. So what? Umgekehrte Situation in England haette der britische Aussenminister sicherlich auch nicht auf deutsch geantwortet. Egal ob und wie gut Westerwelle Englisch spricht, sprechen denn die anderen Aussenminister ausser ihrer Muttersprache (englisch) noch etwas anderes?

Yep, and quite seriously...what would have happened the other way around: Press conference in the UK, after UK elections, with a UK politician and a German journalist asking questions in German...

I am not judging the situation...I just don't think that anyone would have bothered if the same thing would have happened in a country other than Germany!
